Miller Plating, ERRS, USEPA Region 5
ER crews have begun cleanup activities at an electroplating facility located
near Evansville, IN. These activities include collecting, hazcatting and providing approved T&D for 65,000 + gallons of plating fluids, acids, cyanides and other hazardous liquids stored in tanks, vats, drums, pits, totes and in process lines in the main plating building. ER crews decommissioned, decontaminated and demolished an on-site chemical storage warehouse and wastewater treatment system. This project is expected to be completed in April, 2009.
August, 2008 to Present Kenyon Pierce Landfill, ERRS, USEPA Region 1
ER crew are performing removal actions for buried containers and drums containing various hazardous liquids including benzene, MEK, toluene and other chemicals at an abandoned former solid landfill site. Crew excavated drums and containers, overpacked, staged, counted, inventoried, inspected and provided air monitoring. To date, 4000 +
drums, pails and containers of various sizes have been exhumed at this site. Work is on-going. Planned activities include backfill of excavated areas and installation of an earthen cover. This spring, crew will oversee T&D of hazardous substances to an offsite CERCLA approved site

Hospital Response
ER’s emergency response crew was called in for the decontamination of the Emergency Room of the state’s busiest hospital. The highly toxic chemical Nitroaniline was the source of contamination. Residue of this chemical had contaminated the clothing of workers at a chemical re-packaging facility where the spill had occurred earlier in the day. These workers were sent to the hospital emergency room, contaminating areas of the hospital. The Emergency Room and other areas of the hospital were on “lock-down” status until ER’s response crew completed the decontamination process.

Tanker Barge collision oil spill
ER crew provided spill recovery services to contain 400,000+ gallons of fuel oil which spilled into the Mississippi River after an oil tanker collided with a barge. Oil poured into the river just off the banks of downtown New Orleans. US Coast Guard closed off a 100-mile stretch of the Mississippi River from the port of New Orleans to the Gulf of Mexico. ER’s crew worked with the US Coast Guard and stayed on-site for eight weeks to contain and recover oil spilled by this incident.
June, 2008
Iowa Flood
ER responded with an initial crew of 100+ to areas in Iowa flooded by the overflowing Cedar and Iowa Rivers. ER managed hazardous waste recovery operations from a command post in Cedar Rapids. In addition to Cedar Rapids, recovery services were provided for Iowa City, Waterloo and several surrounding smaller communities. ER boat ops’ crew managed, recovered and transported HHW, orphan containers and white goods to three staging areas for waste sampling and segregation. ER worked with officials from FEMA, USEPA and IDNR to mitigate HHW dispersed by flood waters.

City of Jacksonville
ER crew excavated 20,000 + tons of lead contaminated soil at two public schools sites in Jacksonville, FL. Our crew worked with city officials and local engineering firms to complete restoration in time for the 2008 fall term.

Missouri River Diesel Spill
ER crew responded to an oil spill in the Missouri River near West Alton. ER crew deployed boom to contain the spill that resulted when the towboat collided with a rock dam, releasing diesel fuel. Our crew worked with the US Coast Guard and MDNR to contain and recover spilled fuel.
